Overview

The Sidama region is named after the indigenous ethnic group, the Sidama. This is one of the most renowned growing regions in the world. The region is well known for having ideal climate conditions for growing coffee. This is all due to high altitudes, ample rainfall, optimal temperature and rich soil. Farming methods in Sidama remain largely traditional. Farmers intercrop their coffee plants with other food crops. Coffee is typically grown without fertilizers or pesticides. Most farm work is done manually and very few tasks are mechanized during processing.

Producer

Romel General Trading began exporting green coffee beans in 2018 under the name Cerealia Coffee. Since then, Cerealia Coffee has grown to be prominent in the coffee export sector, with coffee washing stations in the Sidama Bensa and Yirgacheffe Chelelektu areas.

Sidama coffee is processed at their Bensa washing station. The station purchases cherry from the farmers and oversees processing. The mill specializes in both fully washed and natural processing methods.

The station employs about 150 permanent and seasonal workers at peak harvesting season. The staff and management play prominent quality control roles by only accepting red, ripe cherries and implementing several sorting and drying practices until it has reached the desired quality level.
